Discovering the Researcher Storyteller

Several years ago, I found myself in a conversation that would challenge my professional identity and ultimately shape my approach to sharing knowledge with others. An event planner who was organizing a speaking event for me was grappling with how to introduce me on the event flyer. Her concern was straightforward yet profound; she feared that labeling me merely as a “researcher” would dissuade people from attending, assuming the presentation might be too technical, dull, or irrelevant to their interests.

The Proposal: Researcher or Storyteller?

During our discussion, the event planner remarked that she had enjoyed my previous talk because it was enlivened by narratives—it wasn't just about conveying information, but about telling a story. Thus, she suggested that referring to me as a “storyteller” might be more appealing and engaging for potential attendees. This proposition initially took me aback, given the potential perception that equated storytelling with a lack of academic rigor.

The Convergence of Data and Narrative

After some reflection, I realized that the essence of my work as a qualitative researcher indeed revolved around gathering and interpreting stories. These stories weren't merely anecdotes; they were data imbued with meaning and humanity. This epiphany helped me appreciate the concept of stories as ‘data with a soul.' I understood that storytelling could serve as a powerful vehicle to convey research findings in a relatable and impactful way.

The Birth of a New Term: Researcher Storyteller

In response to the event planner's initial reluctance to merge these two roles, I proposed a compromise that would encapsulate my dual functions: “researcher storyteller.” Although the term was unorthodox, it effectively captured the hybrid nature of my work. This novel title signaled to the audience that they could expect an experience that was both informative and engaging—a synthesis of empirical rigor and narrative resonance.
